Alpine Skiing

Due to its location relative to the Hochkönig massif, the ski area of Mühlbach am Hochkönig has proved over the years to be a very snow-sure ski area. Depending on the snow conditions, the lifts are open from the mid- December to mid-April.

A ski pass for the Hochkönig area is also the ski pass for the entire Ski Amadé area. There is also a ski pass (30% discount) for only the smaller Hochkeil area (12 km of slopes). There are great off-piste options here.

Ski Amadé

Ski Amadé comprises no less than 760 km (!) of slopes and consists of 5 ski areas; Hochkönig (120 km of slopes), Gasteinertal (187 km of slopes), Großarltal (80 km of slopes), Salzburger Sportwelt (225 km of slopes) and Schladming-Dachstein (188 km of slopes), making it the largest ski area in Austria. Whether you are a beginner or an experienced skier, there is something for everyone. You can go anywhere with your ski pass and the ski bus can take you to the surrounding areas.

Hochkönig ski area

The quiet Hochkönig ski area with a view of the impressive Hochkönig massif (2941 m) has 120 km of slopes, and consists of the villages of Mühlbach, Dienten and Maria Alm (blue runs 52 km, red runs 41 km and black runs 19 km). The area is known for its long runs on wide varied slopes with fantastic views of the Hochkönig massif. Modern lifts and favourable waiting times make it a very attractive area. Skiing the Königstour (35 km) will take you from one side of the area to the other, without encountering the same slope twice.

Atmospheric Alpine huts

The area is additionally loved because of a wide choice of Alpine huts (Almhutten) where you can enjoy a drink or lunch, authentic Austrian and sometimes also more modern cuisine. These Alms can be found amongst the pine trees on the slopes. Also, for après-ski the Tiergarten Alm or Scheppal Alm are the places to be.

In high season you can also go up the slopes on Wednesday evenings. The Tiergartenalm and the Zapferalm stay open longer, so you can still enjoy a drink in the setting sun (and with a bit of luck there is live music as well).

The youngsters among can have a blast in the three different fun parks. There is free WIFI around the larger lift stations. The Kingscab even has its own WIFI per cabin and in case snowfall is not sufficient, an extensive network of artificial snow machines has been set up.

Cross-country skiing

Enjoy no fewer than 700 km of well-groomed trails in the Ski Amadé area. From a small track to complete day trips, it is all possible.

The views that you will encounter along the way are breathtaking. From views on the high peaks to beautiful paths through the fragrant forests.

If you really don’t know when to quit, on the Maria Alm there are even illuminated trails for the evenings.

Tour- skiing

For the more experienced there is ski touring. The possibilities are endless, the guide shows you the way. Along the way you will come across packs of white powdery snow, which is of course precisely the reason why you started skiing. The slopes are yours and you are usually the first to draw a trail in the fresh white snow. All this of course with a brilliant view of the Hochkönig massif.

Sledging and tobogganing

Sledding is like karting and gives a special speed sensation because of the direct contact with the ground. This explains the popularity of the sled. Mühlbach has the longest toboggan run (4.5 km) in the area. This special trail is close to the Hochkeil lodge and the starting point is at Alpengasthof Kopphütte.

Winter hiking

If you love hiking through nature and the vast forests and you enjoy clean air and fresh snow, Mühlbach is an ideal area for you with its 85 km of prepared winter hiking trails. Some hiking trails start near the Hochkeil Lodge. Special snowshoes are recommended for the unprepared routes. The routes are generally well marked so you can make wonderful trips and do not have to get lost.
